Also remember that GPS usage at an alternate is different than the destination. You must have all the equipment required for the approach and cannot substitute GPS.
Case in point: I fly out of a standard GA airport serviced by GPS approaches (and an NDB). There is a class D airport nearby that has an ILS approach. However, we cannot file that airport as our alternate because we do not have an ADF receiver onboard. The initial approach fix is an NDB, and normally the GPS can be used to identify it, but that is not allowed for an alternate.
