Honestly there's been many situations in my past where one couldn't easily identify the airport until very close due to not being familiar with the area and going to someplace that's just lost in a sea of urban development. Could have guessed like some have, but GPS and other technologies have been a godsend here.

It's ok it happens to all of us. Every time I was supposed to fly into Cincinnati, I ended up landing at a big airport in Northern Kentucky - not even the same state.
