Oh. I've heard that AF requires you to spend a certain amount of study time on each module before you are allowed to go forward - at least that's what I've gotten from most of the complaints about it.

If I remember right, per FAA regs, the CFI renewal course has to be a min of 16 hrs. That is why the AF's modules have a time requirement. I'm not familiar with the other online courses, but don't you have to spend the same amount online with those also?

Default reinstate

[quote=UCLAbruins;549597]My CFI expired in Nov. 2000, will they renew it, being expired that long? Is there a check ride involved??

Yes, there's a checkride. You (like me) are not doing a renewal; you are doing a CFI reinstatement. Unlike the initial CFI check, the reinstatement need NOT be done with the FSDO/Inspector. Additionally, you do not need to retake writtens. Nor do you need a practical test endorsement; you can "self-declare" that you're ready for the check.

But, I tell you what, if you haven't flown a light aircraft lately, it is DIFFERENT.

No. With the Gleim, if you blow through too many, there's a small prompt (at least the last of the three times I've taken it), but that's about it. The course is =designed= to be 16 hours but YMMV.

Read the two posts' prior to yours, it explains it.

Thanks!

Ok, now I understand the complaints about the time involved with the AF course. Well, at least the AF course is free for life after the initial fee. Opps, or do the other FIRC courses only have a one time fee also?

I think AF is the only course that allows you to revalidate forever after you pay once.

Gleim allows you to save their material in PDF or HTML. The system calculates how many minutes you spent reading the online material but you have to manually enter how many minutes you spent reading the PDF or HTML file.

If someone really wanted to finish it fast, they could finish the entire course in less than 2 hours and lie about the time spent on reading the PDF/HTML file.

Interesting. That wasn't there when I last did the course.

I'm coming up for renewal again; we'll see what's changed.
