Default College Advice Needed

I am a first year student at ERAU DAB. My major is Aeronautical science. I am well ahead of everyone here and am slated to have my private by the end of this semester.

A little bit about me. I come from Northwestern NJ. Not an overly populated area, but there is plenty around my home. Nice area.

Now - I have seen the light, and finally realize that the AS degree here is pretty much worth the paper it is printed on. The social life here is non-existent, and Daytona, as well as Florida, sucks.

With that being said, I want to pursue a degree outside of aviation and fly on the side to obtain my ratings, as many of you have recommended. Rutgers, being the state school of NJ, does not appeal to me. I am undecided about what I want to do. I have always wanted to get into the medical field. Opinions?

I have looked at PSU because it is relatively local for me (3 hrs) and have heard lots of good things. I have also heard some bad about PSU. Essentially, I like the big school atmosphere, something always going on. Riddle doesn't have much to offer in that department.

I know that lots of guys have gotten into the medical field, make lots of mulah, and fly on the side. If I could, I would split medical field and flying 50/50. I consider myself a technical thinker, and am very persistent. I learn well. I always strive for perfection. For example, all of my private maneuvers here at Riddle exceed commercial PTS, and I start my cross countries tomorrow.

I don't want to waste another semester at riddle. I want to transfer out after this semester so I need to get a kick on with applications.

My academics:
Riddle - 4.0
High School - 3.77/4.0
SAT - Critical Reading 670 Math 580 Writing 590

I appreciate all comments, recommendations, etc.

Get a degree is something that you can do on the side like accounting or just a degree is anything basically. It doesnt really matter where you go to school. Just get a degree... Im a first year student at a Community College in Maryland. I already have my PPL and im working on my instrument ratings. I pay 1500 bucks a semester...with the extra money, I fly more and..im sure there are people on here who can answer this question better than me but thats just my 2 cents.

Why don't you look at Parks? While I was instructing there we had a bunch of Riddle's come looking for some social life.

Yes, in today's industry, it is cheaper perhaps a nice backup to get a degree in something else and fly on the side, but I really value my aviation science degree. Its amazing what people don't know the first day of class at an airline (and I'm talking basic stuff).

You're sound smart and confident, what's stopping you from a double major?

Speaking from my own experience, since I was in your shoes three years ago as a Riddle freshman with no soical life. Do what makes sense to you and you won't have any regrets. Three years ago I got sick of riddle and so did my roomate as well. We both left after only spending one year there and I can tell you this. I decided to finish up degree in Aviation Science through the on-line course study with Utah Valley University. I ended up working as a file clerk for a law firm in my hometown of Providence, RI. Then I did flight training at my local school at T.F. Green airport. I am now a flight instructor at Hanscom Airfield in Bedford, MA finishing up my last semster at UVU.

My roomate decided to leave and pursue all of his ratings and became a CFII in a 6 month program at ATP. Neddless to say he did not want to talk about anything aviation related after the sixth month. However he now has 2000 hours and is the senior instructor at his flight school as well as a part 135 captain on the side.

I guess what I am trying to tell you is do what works for you, and you will be fine. My roomate took a faster pace approach while I went on my own stride. But were both moving on in the right direction doing what we intended to do by this point.

Good Luck and work Harder, and remember to enjoy yourself along the way!
