The authority for a pilot to be soloed in a new category/class is in 61.31(d). The FAA even has a recommended endorsement for it in AC 61-65.

Since most advanced ratings do not require solo work, I'm not sure that would even be allowed. Even if it was, you would never find my signature on that endorsement...

You can solo a student pilot in a twin, but there is also a legal provision to meet the solo requirements in a twin while acting as a PIC with a CFI on board. This is a practical necessity, since no one would ever insure a non-rated pilot in a ME aircraft.
Could you tell me where in the regs I can find the exceptions to solo flight that allow a CFI to be present during "supervised solo"? I'm still searching for it.

Thanks.

Steve

I know this is an old thread, but I wanted to mention that my university has a half hour Seminole solo as part of the part 141 multi-engine course curriculum. I flew solo in the Seminole before I got my ME, and the .5 of solo is required before graduating the course.

61.129(b)(4)

Applies only to commercial pilot applicants, don't think I made that clear in my other post.

A university is a large enough organization to either self-insure or negotiate the required insurance. A mom-and-pop could never afford it.

Since it is 0.5, sounds like it's a lap or two around the pattern.

There is no requirment by the FARS to solo the twin ever before you get your rating. For an add-on rating there is no time requirment except for the 3 hours in 60 days. for an initial commercial student in the twin it states 61.129 (B) (4): "10 hours of solo flight time in a multiengine airplane or 10 hours of flight time performing the duties of pilot in command in a multiengine airplane with an authorized instructor (either of which may be credited towards the flight time requirement in paragraph (b)(2) of this section), on the areas of operation listed in §61.127(b)(2) of this part that includes at least"

and il answer your next question. How can a person without a multi rating log PIC? the MEI must give them an endorsment to act as PIC of an aircraft they do not hold a rating in. the endorsment is in the Advisory circular
