I flight instructed for 2 years, then went to the regionals. Was an FO for 1 year then upgraded to a jet. Was a Capt for 5 years with 2,500 jet PIC and still cant get to a major any time soon and this was durring amazing growth at the regionals. Growth that will never happen again, so I think your talking around 10yrs to get to a major. However luck has a lot to do with it.

Thanks for the info guys... it really is helping me to plan out my time and see where it is best invested.

What kind of hours does a typical FO get... or is it that varied?... Reason being is that I have a business now, and am wondering on whether or not I'll be able to run it at any kind of consistent basis...

Oh and one other thing... when I see the pay grades for FO and captain - they typically have no more info than a 5 year mark... so what happens after that? no more pay increase?

You don't even know if you will get a regional job yet. Everything is uncertain and able to change at a moments notice. I would plan for the worst and hope for the best if I were you. Worry more about how you will survive as a CFI for the next five years with a $900 school loan payment to make.

Yeah, I'm definately keeping my day job so that the 900 dollar payment won't hurt so bad

From the way I've been reading though, ATP grads are being eaten up at xpressjet and ATP's other affiliates... future's looking grim eh?

It is difficult to tell, but if oil keeps going up everyone will be hurting.
