Red face 40 yr old wants to fly for hire: An alternative?

Ok, I've been reading all the posts about how tough it can be out there flying for someone. One thing I know is that I absolutley love to fly my mooney anywhere, anytime. Are there any avenues to fly your own plane for hire for an income that will cover the expenses? Becoming a part time CFI seems risky due to lawsuits. Am I dreaming or is there a way?? Thanks, Ed

PS: I would keep my day job, and stay married. SKYhigh would be proud.

Other than CFI, about the only way to do that would be to enroll the airplane in a flight club so otheras can rent it when you're not using it...you can probably cover your expenses and maybe make a little net income. But you still have liaibility here.

As far as a deal where you can actually fly the airplane...I can think of two ways, but the economics are not very predictable and you still have liaibility if you carry pax. Personally, I would be far more comfortable with liaibility if I fly the airplane myself (vice CFI / rental).

1) Sightseeing/photography/animal/fish spotting: Generally you can do these without a 135 certificate, but you would need to research the applicable rules and figure out the local market and competion for these activities.

2) Get a one-man 135 cert and do charter flights...but this is also tough business to make money in, and you'd be competing with turbo-props and larger recip twins.
