Question Questions on the requirement of a POH onboard

Hey folks -

Question: I thought I read somewhere that aircraft certified before a certain date are not required to have an approved manufacturers POH/AIM onboard. I'm looking through 91.203, but don't see anything mentioning the POH requirements, just the Airworthiness/registration.

The aircraft in question are a 1956 182A and a 1962 182

Thanks,
LS

Planes that old had an "owners manual" but it was required in the cockpit. All you needed to know were in the placards in the cockpit.

How can I find out if that applies to these aircraft? Is there any guidance in the FARs?

Thanks!

91.9b states:
No person may operate a U.S.-registered civil aircraft—

(1) For which an Airplane or Rotorcraft Flight Manual is required by §21.5 of this chapter unless there is available in the aircraft a current, approved Airplane or Rotorcraft Flight Manual or the manual provided for in §121.141(b); and

.....and 21.5 states:

(a) With each airplane or rotorcraft that was not type certificated with an Airplane or Rotorcraft Flight Manual and that has had no flight time prior to March 1, 1979, the holder of a Type Certificate (including a Supplemental Type Certificate) or the licensee of a Type Certificate shall make available to the owner at the time of delivery of the aircraft a current approved Airplane or Rotorcraft Flight Manual.

......so I gather that if the aircraft was manufactured before March 1, 1979; it does not need to have an approved POH onboard?

That has always been my understanding. You go back far enough, you'll find no prohibitions about flying in known icing as well. Good stuff....
