Default Multi in DFW area for training

So an MEI i know has all his time in a Seminole, so to avoid needing 5 hours in type before he can instruct me, we are trying to find a Seminole. Is anyone aware of a seminole in the DFW area (or even 1-2 hours away) for rent? Also, any other multi's would do. Obviously looking for cheap as we can get but I am willing to spend to get this next hurdle out of the way.

Any ideas or leads are GREATLY appreciated

waaaaiiitttt a second.

He has all his time in a Seminole... and you want him to teach you in a Seminole. So why do you need to find a cheap seminole so he can rent? Do you mean he has all his times in something else?

This makes about as much sense as "all your base are belong to us"

After re-reading the OP I get the point now, although a little proofreading goes a long way.

{takes grammar nazi hat off}

MEI has only flown seminoles and OP is searching for one.
If no seminole is available OP is looking for other aircraft available but the MEI would require 5 hours time in type prior to teaching OP.

Makes sense to me. The MEI probably does not want (or cannot afford) to buy 5 hours in another type if it can be avoided. Find a seminole, problem solved.

Like the OP mentioned, an MEI's must have 5 hours in type BEFORE he can instruct in a ME aircraft (there are loopholes in this reg but it would not be safe to teach in an airplane you had never flown anyway).

I agree rick... but OP says all his friend's time is in seminoles. Unless he got his MEI in less than 5 hours (possible...), he should have at least 5 hours PIC in a seminole. Then why would he need to have 5 MORE?

Also, what loopholes? I wasn't aware of any.

haha sorry for any confusion... i did re-read it and it makes sense to me, but thats because i know what i meant i guess.

He has the time in the seminole so if we find a seminole, we can train in the seminole no problem without any additional hour requirements on his part. If we find an aztec or travelair or something along those lines, he has to fly 5 hours PIC in that airframe before he can teach me. I thought this rule was understood maybe i should have explained that first

also, the reason i said any other multi would do is because we will just do the 5 hours in type for him so he can teach me... but if we could avoid that by finding a seminole, that's gravy.

Are we all tracking now? :P

PS, OP = original poster?

OP is Original Poster.

The "loophole" to teaching in and getting 5 hours of PIC at the same time is for you to tag along with your buddy while he's getting his 5 hours of PIC. You can figure the rest out yourself, I don't want to corrupt your mind too much.

My understanding: He already has five in the seminole, but zero in any other twins. So it would make sense to use a seminole to save the expense of FIRST getting five hours PIC in another type (duchess, apache, whatever).

If you read the reg very carefully it species that an MEI must have 5 hours PIC in type to give instruction towards a certificate or rating.

As generic as this sounds, it actually has a very specific legal meaning: Instruction which is specifically REQUIRED by the FARs for a cert/rating. You can still give other instruction (FAM, FR, IPC, etc). Also you can give instruction towards a cert/rating as long as you do not use that for the basis of a checkride endorsement.

The loophole is that the ME add-on does not require a set amount of hours, just logged training to proficiency on certain areas. So you can legally do the training for the first five hours. Since most students need about 10-15 hours anyway, you can base all the required logged training and checkride endorsement on the final flight or two...at which time the MEI has already gotten his five hours. You just have to make sure that ALL required items are logged AFTER the MEI gets his five hours, regardless of whether they were logged before.

Like I said before...this is NOT safe, you really need time in type and even five hours may not be enough if it was a XC. Those five hours should be focused on maneuvers, especially engine-out work, and should include training from an MEI who is experienced in type. Your life may depend on this...

Same principle applies to intial CFI applicants...anybody can get them ready, you just have to hand them off to a two-year CFI for a final ground and flight check, which must cover (and log) all required ground and flight knowledge/skill items.

Skymates at GKY has two Seminoles. He would have to do a checkout ride in one, which is about an hour. Also, if you go to GPM just up the road from GKY there is a Seneca on field that rents out. Information about the Seneca can be obtained at Aviator Air Center at GPM. US Flight Academy at DTO has a couple of Senecas as well as a Twin Star.

A year ago I could have helped ya out, I had purchased a turbo seminole to build some multi time in. It's a great plane for Multi-Training.

Hope that helps, best of luck to you.
