Funny you mention that because before I went in for my pvt checkride, I had a meeting with the chief flight instructor and we talked about app/dep control and he mentioned that living in a LA is not like the rest of the country. In LA there are heli specific routes and frequencies, but once you get out of this area (such as Santa Barbara), I'd need to contact app/dep control, ground, etc, which is standard procedure (not like LA).

This is specifically why I want to use flight following. I haven't done it yet and I told my instructor that I'd like to learn about the various services available to me.
Yeah, I've spent quite a listening to ATC, but I've never listened to the centers. I just dialed up ZLA and I'm listening to that now
