Btw, what does IFR traffic do? Do they do the same, or do they receive the information from ATC?
I get ATIS on Com2 as soon as I'm in range. Just have both radios set at about the same volume and listen to both until I get the ATIS and make sure I don't miss a call for me on Com1.

ATC normally does not supply the wx info other than most recent altimeter, but probably would if asked and they had the time and you had a good reason for not getting it yourself.

Interesting information! I'm doing my commercial heli right now and I will be starting IFR stuff soon, but I figured it would be good to try my hand at flight following so that I will be better prepared to talk to ATC when I start IFR communication. It's weird because they don't really teach us much about talking to clearance, approach, ground, approach, or departure because we're usually contacting the tower directly, apparently because LA is pretty heli friendly. However, the chief flight instructor did say that LA is a pretty special circumstance and outside of LA I'd be talking to approach and ground controllers more often.

Thanks for the info!
Mike
