Default IFR long X-country; foreign airports

I am trying to definitively determine if it would be possible to combine my required long cross country for the IFR rating with a trip to the Bahamas. Nothing about foreign airports in 61.65. Perhaps only the final approach of the 3 (or 1st airport of departure) could be in the Bahamas? Any insight appreciated.

I'm almost ready for my trip as well, and I was pondering the same thing! Hopefully we can both get an answer here...

Save it. You're a new private pilot and you want to cross all that water? Crossing water brings in a bunch of new complications and planning.

Not necessarily Bahamas in my case. I was thinking more like Canada. Although when I got that idea it was a little warmer outside. I'll probably settle for somewhere in the south (and domestic).

Yeah I'll echo Usmc, everyone in primary flight training wants to conquer the world with 124 hours. Save the ambituous stuff for your commercial time building, where you need to come up with places to go purely for the time.

For private pilot students I'd be very careful in the Bahamas, not only over water ops, but these places can be crazy busy with vfr traffic and airline ops. Especially since a lot if non standard things happen there it can be dangerous.

Most fields are uncontrolled with the exception of Fpo and NAS. Like mentioned I would probably save those trips for your commercial ticket. Remember you also have to comply with over water requirements as well as customs paper work.

Fly safe and have fun!

Ummm... not a new pilot. I'm speaking of the IFR rating. And I would be going with my instructor (of course- I can't file IFR Flt. plan myself). Bimini is practically in sight of FT. Lauderdale. It's actually closer than KEYW from my base at KPIE.

I used to be in a flying club where one of the older pilots was into renting a G1000 Skylane to go to the Bahamas. He dropped a lot of cash no doubt but he also gave a nice slideshow on how to do it wisely & safely, everything from paperwork to flotation devices. I suggest see if you can find such a presentation, maybe look at AOPA as a starting point.

I've posted this question elsewhere, but; I am trying to definitively determine if it would be possible to combine my required long cross country for the IFR rating ( 250 nm, 3 diff. approaches at 3 diff airports, etc) with a trip to the Bahamas. Nothing about foreign airports in 61.65. Perhaps only the final approach of the 3 (or 1st airport of departure) could be in the Bahamas? I would be going with my instructor (of course- I can't file IFR Flt. plan myself). Any insight appreciated, or if anyone knows of an FAA document mentioning this.
