True, pilots did adopt much of their seafaring counterparts' traditions. But in this case, I had the professional bodies of engineers, physicians, etc., in mind. Though their legal reach is only national, their members seem to more or less share the same standards worldwide – certainly more than pilots do. And, with a common international language, we have a distinct communication advantage.
