Default Interested in flight training

Hi, I am interested in learning to fly and wanted to get some honest feedback. I am 25 and have a degree, I graduated a few years back and never used it, I currently work in construction. I don't make a lot but have no debt and single. I am serious about becoming a pilot, there are a lot of flight schools around me, there is one that I have talked to a couple students who gave high recommendations. The cost is about 65/hr for the plane and 20 for the instructor. My plan would be to pay as I go, I figure I could do it in 2 years. Is that realistic? My main concern is I wont be able to find a job after I finish. What could I expect as the total cost of training, I was estimating 20k, does that sound right?

I dont understand how you spent 20k on 40 hours. I am figuring 100 per hour times 200 hours. In reality I know it wont be 100 per hour and Im not sure what the total number of hours will be, but that's a rough estimate I came up with, is that realistic?

What sort of training are you expecting to accomplish in that 200 hrs and what type of plane are you paying $65/hr?

They have 150s and 152s and others that cost more, but I really want to do it as cheap as possible. I was hoping to get up through cfi in 200 hours so I can get a job.

Unless that school is part 141 you'll need a minimum of 250 to get your commercial, which would mean probably a minimum of 255 to get your initial CFI even if you did the commercial from the right seat you'll need some brushing up.

PS those rates are cheap. For my private I rented a Warrior for $100/hr, CFI was $60.

$65/hr actually sounds a bit low for the airplane depending where you are located and the type. What are your goals? Corporate, airline, freight? Two years to get a commercial and instrument are doable for sure, but I think the cost will be higher. One piece of advice I would give is assume it will take longer and cost more. Then be sure you have the time and money set aside to complete at least a phase of training. For example as a minimum during private figure 10-20 hours for solo and try to fly at least twice a week. Also study as much as possible before the lesson you may not understand it all until the flight, but a cockpit is an expense and distracting place to conduct ground school. Good luck!
