I bought a Cessna 150 right after I got my private, and it has been the cheapest way to get hours. It is really nice to be able to go fly whenever the weather is good and not have to hassle with trying to find an airplane to rent on nice days. Also, I agree with the guy that said fly at night, night and xc hours are the hours that are hard to come by in your training

I was going to mention a C-170 or C-180 tail dragger. They are inexpensive for sure but I wasn't sure that choice was for everyone.

It WILL make you a better pilot.

I've always had respect for anyone who had a few hundred hours tailwheel.

I would caution tail draggers because of resale issues, it's best to borrow someone else's and pick up the tab on some Mx on top of fuel, oil, and hanger.

If you are interested in splitting an aircraft, I live in the Dallas area and I work a 80/30 on my overseas rotation. I'm looking at doing the same thing buying one or leasing one for my month off and flying as many hours as I can get. I got my PPL with only 42 hours in 13 days back in November. Let me know if you are interested. I'm an A&P mechanic also, I don't have my IA yet.

Check out a Bellanca Super Viking! I bought one after my instrument several years ago and It definately helped me out. One of if not the best value out there for a high performance piston single.

This might be a good idea since we both work rotations. I used to live in the Dallas area (rockwall) and may move back in the next year.

Email me and we can discuss stevenicholson84[at]gmail.com

I hope to get my ppl checkride soon. I leave next week for 28days, so hopefully early April.

I would like to wait until I get the rating first!

I like the super vikings, but was concerned by maintenance costs.

If you decide to buy, especially a plane that's not "mainstream", you want to find someone familiar with they type to do a prebuy and let you know what you are getting into.

Bellanca's have wood wings.......so...... your everyday A&P wouldn't exactly know what they are looking at. With that said, they are a great cruiser and fun to fly

I've still got my Viking. Insurance is 1k, my annuals usually run around 1,500. Let me know if you want to know any specifics.
