I really can't add much to the advice about the good that instructing would do to your skills, let alone reduce your expenses v just renting. The sheer boredom of flying a C-152, without a real mission or even someone to talk to....

If you can't see instructing, get your multi and find a way (buy?) your way into a right seat with a non 121 operator that flies multiengine aircraft. You won't be the first to have done it, and I'm sure this suggestion will illicit some negative feedback, but its a way better idea than wasting your time and money flying around aimlessly in a SEL just to log time.
