Default Quick question about airspaces

I'm a current flight student and taking my pre solo knowledge test, One of the questions states " Start at the surface and go up to 5000 feet above your airport describing the airspace". My question is if my airport is located in class D airspace is it class D all the way to the surface or is there a class G airspace under the class D.

Thanks, Drew

D goes to surface in the designated area, usually SFC-2500 AGL and 4 NM radius circle. But if the tower is closed it typically reverts to E which can have some funny shapes and may not go to the surface.

Look at a sectional to give you clues: extentions, dimensions, etc of the airspace around your own airport.

Default Quick question about airspaces

Class D airspace has no "layering" like that of the upside down cake pattern like in B airspace. Therefore it is usually a circle of a 4NM radius around the central airport. Typically as stated above it reaches roughly 2500AGL (translate that to MSL - should be on your sectional) then typically it is echo above to 5,000 MSL HOWEVER some D airspace is underneath other types of controlled airspace. For example there may be a couple hundred feet of the Echo above the class Delta ceiling however above this E airspace possibly a Bravo (class B) is present. A look at the sectional and the Legend will entail the details of your situation! Good Luck
