747 blows 4 tires, aborts takeoff from LAX

None of the 232 passengers or crew hurt on Australia-bound jetliner

The media is making this out as the 747 blew 4 tires, then aborted as a result; which maybe the correct sequence of events.

However, it says that the CA noticed a warning light go off during the t/o and so decided to abort. Wouldn't it be more likely that after the decision was made to abort, that the tires then blew out during deceleration on the rejected t/o?

I read this article too and wondered how you could blow 4 tires on takeoff, then abort. Now, I see how you could blow 4 tires after slamming yourself down after abort. Either way, I'm glad they got her slowed down and no one was hurt.

I used to fly the -400. During ground school, they showed us the certification video of the -400 doing a max gross-weight rejected takeoff.

The jet has carbon brakes. As they initiated abort at V1, the jet passed the camera--the brakes were visibly glowing cherry-red to dull-white-hot.

After the abort, it takes about 20-30 minutes, but the heat propagates through the brakes and rim to heat up the nitrogen in the tires. This causes the tire pressure to increase dramatically.

To prevent the tires from blowing up (which can be damaging or lethal), the rims have fuse plugs. Think of it as a hole sealed with lead or solder. This has been true on all 7 types of jets I have flown. They melt and blowout the tire pressure in a controlled fashion.

Probably what happened here.

Depending on weight, V1 would have been anywhere between 137-151kts. We have 18 tires so blowing out 4 doesn't hurt too much.

I don't know, I couldn't make myself last 8 minutes to the end on the first video, and I saw even less of the next video (thanks to the narrator). Give me Deltalina and her finger anytime.

No kidding! We had a jet in Ecuador that aborted for an engine fire light caused by the bleed air mainifold exploding (way more than a rupture) and they melted all 16.....
