I guess I am still not clear on the housing issue. From everything I read, I thought you could not refuse the permanent accommodations even if they are sub standard to what was promised. We don't need perfection, just a decent place to raise our two little ones. Just really want to try to get a handle on what we would be getting ourselves in to.

I understand what you're saying and why you're confused.

Technically, they can force you to take what's given and that's it. In practice, it's not so 'black and white.' You can negotiate different accommodations and you may or may not win. It's a high stakes game because your only trump card is to threaten to quit. 4 months ago, that was a powerful card; today, not so powerful.

The only other option is to opt out of company accommodations, but that's not a great option currently given the price of villas in Dubai. (4 years ago, it was a great option.)

Hope that helps. Maybe someone else can explain it better...

Wow! I'm a CFI right now and my living accommodations are equal to if not better than this. THAT SINK!!!! It reminds me of a bowling ball!

Oh yeah. I forgot to ask. If you reject the living accommodations, do they give you a housing allowance?

I am sure their would be self-imposed restrictions for you and your kids. I would think twice about it if you have kids.

Paint it white, tile the commons, and call it "The Citadel"

Ignore the first answer to your question that was from someone without a clue who probably doesn't live in Dubai and most likely has never been to the Middle East.

Come and see for yourself. You can travel anywhere in the UAE at anytime. You can drive to Oman if you like and it's quite a nice place to go for a few days.

Kids education is comparable or better than U.S. public schools. When you include the component of exposure to a multitude of cultures and languages then your children will actually have a clue about what the rest of the world is like, unlike the majority of Americans.

I have a family friend that moved over there to teach at an English speakers university. I agree with TP. I mean, TyphoonPilot.

The housing issues Dubai are starting to sort themselves out. The pics that are referrenced earlier are what EK tried to give to the families waiting for their villas. Everyone but on person rejected them. He was a single DEC. One of the wives from the group sent photos the housing unit in HR. The housing unit apologized and said that those villas were at the lowest standard for EK. The person in HR said that they hadn't seen the villas before they received the photos and appologized for having offered them to the families. Apparently, EK rented them site unseen since they are in such a housing pinch. EK is now offering those to DECs and upgrading single CAPT.
