Hello, I am trying to find a place to take the ICAO English Test in the United States. I am a US citizen and I used to work for a regional airline. Now I have an opportunity to work outside the US, but I need the IACO certification for that job. I know it is ironic to ask a FAA licensed pilot for the proficiency test but what are we going to do?? Does anybody know any US locations for the test and how much? Thanks!!

There is no english proficiency test in the US. Since you are required to speak english to hold a medical certificate, the FAA decided that was good enough. There should be an endorsement on the bottom of your pilot certificate that says "English Proficient", and that is all you can get from the FAA. If not, just request a new certificate from the FAA and it will have it on there. However, there are some places overseas, Australia comes to mind, that will not accept that endorsement as proof of English ability.

There is no one ICAO test. It is up to each regulatory body to determine how to test their pilots. If you need to take some kind of test, you could always sit the UK's RT exam. There are some examiners in the US but it will involve some study to learn the proper Queen's English radio procedures. I did it for my JAA conversion and it was an interesting experience.

I do have the FAA Endorsement, but the country that I am going to (Brazil) does not accept that. You need to Read, Speak and write English for your Private Pilot and so on. FAR Part 61.103 (c). They make you take the test (ANAC Brazil), but it is on hold for some reason.

Try to contact Transport Canada and see if they would allow you to do their exam...

If Brazil requires the EPL endorsement separate from your FAA Airmen's Certificate, then Brazil should administer such an exam. Check with the Brazilian DGCA.

They do administer the exam. But for some reason everything is on hold, no tests for past 2 weeks and it takes months for an appointment. I was just trying to get it done here in the US. Thanks

We have the ELP certificates issued when we take our PCs. Good luck in any event. Brazil is a pretty cool place to fly.

Many moons ago, I was offered a F-100 job in Sao Paulo. I still don't speak a word of Portugese and never has. What I do remember was what they offered in pay, and how I laughed my way out of that meeting. Now I fly there regularly and love the place, hope their pay has increased and that you have a blast down down there... Always offset, and always add or subtract a few feet for safety while in cruise.

I did the ICAO conversion and they accepted my FAA english, but that was also many moons ago I did my conversion. Best of luck to you..

I know of a guy in Central Florida that does the UK RT exam. To be honest with you, from what I've heard, if you sound like you can speak english then it's not such a bad test. UK RT licenses work a treat worldwide (if anyone has a problem with your 'english'). Hope that helps.

Thanks you all. I found a place in Miami called Aviation English Training.
For $150.00 you will be certified.

And for the salary in Brazil, I will be working probably for the same airline that operated F100 years ago. Salary is equivalent to a 7 year FO at a major here in the US. That is starting pay. More importantly NO RESERVE. I repeat NO RESERVE!
