mostly asia- if you have specifics, they are infinitely more helpful than generalities. are we talking dirty looks from the neighbors, or threat of physical harm, here? the meaning of your post may seem very clear to you, but i only get what i read on the screen.

thanks.

Nah....we are beneath the Japanese as well. Trust me on this....very far beneath them. They may not be as open about it (hell I think that makes it worse) but they have very little respect for foreigners, especially pilots.

Hummingbear you have been given very accurate information regarding EK and the pprune forums is a must for further exploration. The choice is yours, I can say personally my family and I wish we never came here. However my guess is you have already made your decision, so good luck.

The Turtle: Sorry it hasn't worked out as well as expected. Sometimes things go bad, and in a big way.

I have applied, but would be coming alone and leaving my family in the US, due to medical/job issues.

EK is NOT my first choice, but I am reconsidering it. It sounded pretty decent about 2-3 years ago...too bad it has gone downhill.

not at all... hence all the questions. between here and the pprune forms, i am definitely getting a general feeling of dissatisfaction, but lacking a lot of specifics, my only bar for comparison would be the general sentiment on the forums at any carrier here in the us, which i would say is about the same. (read any united forums, continental, regional carrier, etc. they are all about as hostile as the ek forums.) the only way for me to really make my own decision is to get some specifics.

turtle, if you are a family man, you are probably a wealth of information, since i have 3 kids myself. (6 and under.) i am really interested in the specific reasons your family regrets the move. (if it's too personal for a public post, i believe there is a way to personal message it to me.) specific information about the problem with schools would be priceless. i hear a lot of general frustration with the school situation, but don't have much specific information.

as for myself, i am a regional captain, and always wanted to fly for ups, but i'm lacking the heavy jet/ long haul time, and thought this would be a good way for me to get there. (was thinking something like 3-5 years at ek until hiring picks up again at brown.) not looking for a quick upgrade as i have pic time in the book already. so i'm not leaving a furlough or a seniority number at the majors.

doesn't mean i've made up my mind, but i'm definitely considering it as an intermediary step. from all i've read so far, people at ek are pretty ticked, but i can't honestly name you a single carrier in the us where the pilots are not generally ticked off, which is why i'm trying to get as many specifics as i can so i can be sure i'm comparing apples to apples.

...so here's a specific question. a theme i hear a lot is the idea that a lot of guys expect to save money at ek, but the salary does not go very far beyond meeting costs. so, at around $7k/month (american) with no housing or utilities costs, what are the major expenses of living in dubai? is it the disparity between school reimbursement and actual cost? medical fees? or are groceries really that expensive?

what are the big unanticipated costs over there?

I thought UPS (or was it FedEx, or both?) requires a pilot applicant not to have lived outside the US in the previous 2 years? This is just what I remember, could be wrong.

To Yankiwi, I am a displaced captain at a regional U.S. airline (Delta Connection) and have an interview in 2 weeks at Emirates. I would appreciate if you could give me a little info about what to expect. Also , I am wondering about the logbook verification procedure. I have over 7 years at 2 regionals experience but my logbook may be off a little. I exceed the mins for Emirates by far but as I am trying to put togetheter my logbook, just wanted to know what they do in the inspection of the logbooks. If you get the chance to respond, or anyone who has any knowledge of this, I would appreciate you help. Thanks, Mike
