Default Emirates with a criminal history

Hello all,

Ive searched the website for this topic before posting this new thread but I was unable to find anything like it. I am looking to apply at Emirates possibly in a couple of years and I have some questions regarding my past. 3 years ago I was convicted of a class 4 misdemeanor (intoxication in public) in the state of virginia, and no it cannot be expunged ever in this glorious "country" that is the commonwealth. This is the only thing on my record other than a speeding ticket 7 years ago. I know the application asks for any drug or alcohol related convictions and of course I would have to say yes and explain. My question is, how much is this conviction going to affect the chances of being selected for an interview? is it going to be 100% absolutely no way of being selected or 100% dont care about the conviction? I have a feeling its somewhere in the middle, but not sure to what end of the spectrum. I know time heals all wounds and that the future holds a possibly better outlook for pilot hiring. Thank you for all of your replies, sorry if this is in the wrong posting section. I wasnt sure weather to post in foreign or law?

I don't know anything about Emirates.

However, if it is where you want to go fly, make sure you apply ASAP. If/when you get the call for an interview, you tell them the whole truth, you let them know what you learned from it, and you let the chips fall where they may.

That will answer your question.

You will probably get all kinds of guesses as responses on this, or any forum. Apply and find out for yourself. Good luck.

I would just put it behind you and not bring it up unless asked. Have a good answer of what you learned from it and how you have had a very clean record since if asked. Another option would be to change your residence to another state before applying. They may require a criminal background report issued by the state of your residence. Doubtful a misdemeanor will show up in a complete seperate state which is over 7 years old.

Rsrv...

While, I've never experienced what you have, it must be a very difficult subject to discuss. You should be admired by your peers for your honesty. You know the saying about those who live in glass houses. With that being said you are on the right course.

About the conviction... it is hard to put that event behind you. However you can use it as a learning experience, and provide insight to others who may try to cross that line in public.

Don't attempt to cover the conviction up as your record will come to the surface during the background and criminal background checks.

There is pilot who flies for EK and posts regularly on APC. His user name is Typhoonpilot. He is a reliable source of information about Dubai and EK as well as a straight shooter and will not lead you astray.

You can rely on his answers and opinions. You may wish to send him a PM.

Before you formally apply to EK, perhaps you can seek the advice of an attorney to see if the conviction can be expunged from your records. Get as much input as you can from reliable individuals who don't shoot from the hip.

Good luck Rsrv.

The post on this subject so far have nailed. Clearly you will have to mention it on your application. The date of the conviction and the time that has past since will tell them a portion of what they need to know, and if selected for an interview, you may never hear a peep of it. If it does come up, just own up to it.

Emirates needs pilots and will be hiring heavily for the next 5 years. Give it a shot and when you come for the interview, just be yourself. Good luck!

If you get the interview, then it shouldn't be a worry. But the sticking point might be getting a UAE visa with some sort of "background". I really don't have a clue, but if the app is accepted, then no worry. Yes, they probably would ask you about it in the interview, but since you hypothetically got the interview, then officially it wasn't a problem. Confusing enough?

thanks for all of the replies guys, I definitely will be forward and honest with the convicttion if I do get an interview and if they ask. I didnt even think about the possiblity of not being able to get a visa in the UAE. I know this has been an issue with my current employer and not being able to go to Canada. thanx again for the responses so far!

It shouldn't be an issue with EK. PM me and I can explain a little better.

Hopefully jopa had some good info but I think you're ok. I flew with a guy about 2 years ago at my last airline whos dream job was Emirates but he thought he was out of the running because of a public intox and he also was fired from a 121 position. Didn't keep in touch when I moved on but last I heard hr got on at ek.
