Qantas pilot stood down for being drunk
A QANTAS pilot who tested positive to alcohol after being removed from a flight has been stood down from duties, the air safety regulator says.
The Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) had been advised of the incident by the airline, which was dealing with the matter under its drug and alcohol management policy, CASA spokesman Peter Gibson said.
"Qantas informed us, as it should have, when the incident occurred," Mr Gibson told AAP.
"They'll keep us fully informed."
Mr Gibson said the female pilot had returned a positive test after a "potential problem" was identified on a Qantas flight.
CASA was unaware of what her reading was, he said.
She had since been stood down from duty pending further assessments.
"They have now got to medically assess the patient by a doctor and determine the next course of action, whether it's counselling or rehabilitation," he said.
"Obviously, the pilot remains stood down until the process is completed, then they must be medically assessed again before being determined fit for duty."
Qantas has confirmed it is investigating the incident in which the pilot was reportedly removed from the passenger jet moments before take-off from Sydney airport because of suspicions she had been drinking.
The incident is said to have occurred last Monday as the Qantas 767-300 aircraft was about to depart for Brisbane.
Qantas later issued a statement saying one of its pilots had been "withheld from service ... for administrative reasons''.
The matter was being investigated and further comment would be inappropriate, a spokesman said.
