Are there any Cathay SO's in the building?

Thats two steps down from command. Its better to reign in hell than serve in heaven.

Command or nothing.

Why upgrade from SO to FO in 4 years when you can upgrade from FO to CA in 4 - 6 years in the US? Sure it may be at a regional but now you're the one logging PIC time. After a few years you can start to apply to US Majors / SWA / UPS / FEDEX / Emitates / etc...

I believe its best to be CA and log PIC time than to spend years as an SO then FO.

To LAFF:

EXACTLY....it is YOUR belief. Let others follow their own interests. Just as you or anyone else shouldn't let a dream be discouraged no matter what others may say.

Just a point of view for everyone

I'm trying to get the guy to think a little bit...

Do you honestly think people want to be SO for 4 years then an FO for a few more before being a Captain when they could be a CA in the US in 1/2 that time?

Believe it or not, by the time people make it to the majors or someting similar, being CA isn't exactly the goal anymore. Making slightly less as a senior FO and qol starts to play a big factor. Most, at least in the US, have already been CA or aircraft commander, sucked up the crappy QOL and sched to get the PIC. Now that they have made to a career destination airline, priorities change.

If you were hired at CAL now, you can supposedly make 73 CA in 3-4 years. What would you rather do? Bid 75/76 FO and enjoy a QOL or take 73 CA in EWR? Bear in mind, taking 73 CA in EWR at the soonest available if you didn't live there, you would be commuting to reserve, living in a crashpad, flying sucky schedules, getting your days off rolled, ect. All for the bragging rights that you are a CA, whooopee.

Get it?
