On a 7&7, but could do an 8/6 with my 22" roll aboard and smaller flight bag. I bought the luggageworks 22" stealth premier and multipurpose cube and they work for me. I'm able to carry on everything unless I get booked for a bulkhead seat. If I have to commute on something like an old ERJ 175, I just use plane-side checking and pick up my bag at the destination before going to my connecting flight.

I did 7 day trips with a 26" Luggage Works bag. I almost never checked it and never got any pushback. I did always travel in uniform thou. I would check the bag when going to recurrent or somewhere else where I knew I wouldn't be re-routed.
I tend to overpack with backups and even in the dead of winter I could cram everything into that 26" bag.

Her scowl continued as she had to interrupt her precious boarding process to write up a gate-check tag.
Six months later, that POS fell apart. Again.
Second time in 12 months for another LW over promise/under deliver.
Never go cheap on luggage.

At a regional several years ago I walked up to 3 pilots of various age, experience fighting over this same thing. I don't give a damn it's luggage, don't play the FA game.
