Default GV.......G550, the differences.

Hello all,

I will be training on the G550 in a few months. Besides the avionics are there any significant differences in the systems?

If I picked up the systems guide on the GV would it prepare me for the G550?

Wanted to get a head start!! Thanks

AA, congrats on moving to the G550. I'm checked out in both the 550 and V "classic" myself. As far as systems go, almost all the systems are the same with a few minor modifications. Ops limits are slightly different as well. If you can understand the GV systems, you are about 90% there.

Avionics may seem intimidating at first, but it is centered around the Honeywell FMS, which is pretty straight forward. After a couple of days in the sim, most guys are pretty comfortable.

Where will you be training?

You're gonna love the 550. It is pretty much the same bird with a new glass office and a few minor tweeks. As SamFox said, you are already 90% there.

I was a sim instructor in the 450 & 550 in SAV. Most of the examiners there will be looking for a good knowledge of the Planeview avionics, which is the majority of the time spent in the GS portion. It takes a "free your mind" attitude to get used to graphical flight planning vs doing everything in the box but the flying part is easy.

Did you have the HUD/EVS in the V? (I never set foot in the classic V in SAV.) You are gonna love how easy HUD/EVS makes it to fly.

Sam, Fred,

Thanks. I am actually a pilot with a AA, however I am also a instructor with CAE, have been teaching as TCE for a little while. Put in the papers to transfer over to the G550 in NJ.

No OFFICIAL time in the GV, however I have flown our G V sim in DFW often, and used the HUD. I learned about the HUD on our 737-800s at AA.

I also play around in the BBJ sim which also has a HUD.

Thanks again for the info. Looking forward to training.

AA,

Well, I came into the GV from an airline background as well. The course in SAV was 10 days GS, 2 FTDs, 7 Sims, Type ride and EVS day (sorta like CAT 3 training).

Fast paced but very doable if you are experienced and motivated. I was required to turn in all my manuals and CDs when I went back to the airline world so I can't help you on gouge, sorry. Gulfstream is touchy about their manuals!

I'm back in the A320 now but still think the G wiz is the best thing out there. It has standard toys that are going to be options (read "no airline will buy") on the 787.

If you haven't already seen it, go to www.gulfstreamplaneview.com to look around.

The main differences between the GV and G550 is the Planeview avionics. There are some other small differences like the out flow valve and main door placement (the only surefire ways I can tell them apart from the outside). The G550 comes standard with some extras like EVS and the HUD, which were options or add ons for the GV or G500. They are a common type rating and the G350 and G450 are also the part of the GV type, but require some differences training. In my G550 initial my coworker and I were the only ones there for the 550 and everyone else was there for the 450 and would be staying an extra week for differences.

I think a guide for the GV would at least get you started in the right direction, but wouldn't bother with any of the previous Gulfstreams. The systems aren't really all that different, but they changed a lot of the names and acronyms to confuse people like my self who came from previous Gulfstreams. Let's see... is that the Left or Combined Hydraulics?
