My 20 year anniversary Seth Thomas that by the time I got it, the battery was dead.

I don't see a Rolex on his wrist in the LEM. The Speedmaster, in fact, beat out Rolex (and a host of others) with NASA.

I see some dudes get so giddy about watches, it reminds me of women buying purses. I'm with Chip--rather have a new Jetski on my dock than on my wrist.

That said, I did sort of purse-up myself a bit with a Seiko Astron GPS. I plunk down somewhere new, push a button, and synch to local time. Kind of nice with the time zone crossing lifestyle.

Full disclosure: I still hate myself a little when I look at it an ooh and ah a bit. I could buy 3 or 5 of them for what a rolex costs but it was still more than I traditionally spend on man bling. If I ever go full metrosexual to get a mani-pedi I'll look back on this purchase as the start of my slide...

5 pages and no mention of FitBit, or the like? My ChargeHR is now my watch. Sure it's dorky looking, but whatever. I want a Movado, (Cheap compared to the last 5 pages of this thread) but then realized I couldn't even go for a walk on half my overnights with that thing on my wrist. No one is gonna mug me for an ugly FitBit.

Bulova Accutron Astronaught, model 214.

But only sometimes.

Maybe I'm not into watches and would rather buy a jet ski.
Maybe I'd rather buy a Bremont 247 Ti-GMT, or a Panerai Luminor GMT, or an IWC Portuguese, or an original Tag Carrera...
Maybe I don't want to look like every other pilot with a GMT Master.

Most airline pilots are too cheap to buy a GMT-Master. Buy what you want.

My wife tried to compare watches to purses.... major pet peeve!!
A quality, mechanical watch is hand made from hundreds and hundreds of minuscule parts. Each mechanism is a feat of engineering, and each complication is the result of building on hundreds of years of research and development.
Just google "tourbillon" and enjoy the read. It's incredible what watchmakers have been able to do through pure mechanics without a pulse of electricity.
I'm not telling you to buy one, but a watch isn't just bling.
On the flip side, I own several "poor man's watches" that are still mechanical and bomb-proof. The Seiko SKX007 is one of the best watches ever made IMO and can be found for $150.

It would seem as though Google disagrees with you...

Are you going to tell someone with a Hamilton Jazzmaster that should have just bought a Datejust and not some Hamilton? And there is a VAST difference in price. You find a new Speedy for around $3500 if you look. A GMT-II? $9500 minimum.

To the poster with the Speedy, great watch. It's on my list of five that I'd like to have.

What amuses me is that a $20 digital throw-away keeps better time than any 4-figure (or 5-figure) high-name brand. They're mostly fashion statements nowadays.

They said Juan Trippe used to buy Rolexes for his pilots back in the day -- when pilots needed stuff like that. That would've been nice.

You really take this stuff personally, don't you?

I'm not into watches either, and have never heard of any of the watches you've named. If I've ever met a pilot with a GMT Master (whatever that is), I'd not have known it.

It would take someone who's really into watches to know that. Someone like yourself, for example.
