Default The Endless Runway

This looks fun:

the Endless Runway

Maybe Fred moved the car rental companies so he could build this.

I think the Luftwaffe had big circles in the 30's.

^^^Maybe....so you could always takeoff and land into the wind....but not to takeoff in a constant turn.

Circular runway: Idiotic idea, promulgated by realtors who see a way to move houses ever closer to an airport.

Tell me again how you do an ILS or Cat III autoland to such a runway? Or if the wind is 30 knots, how do you calculate landing/takeoff performance (or crosswind limits) if the wind goes from head to cross to tail in one maneuver?

Yeah. Ridiculous.

Just mount your treadmill on an old railroad turntable, aim it into the wind, and Whoosh!

One of the tests for a multi sea rating is a high speed circular taxi, tricky at best.

Would need to be seriously banked to prevent centripetal force from throwing you off of a wet or contaminated runway.

Connect the inboard wingtip to a central swivel arm with a rope. At Vr, jam the outboard rudder and disconnect like a glider. For busy airports, a giant tower like the Dumbo ride at Disneyland could launch several at once.

Now, different 'endless runway:' F-105s in Vietnam were flying with huge external loads in a tropical environment. Liftoff speeds were in the 180+ kt range, I've been told.

The Thud drivers used to quip: "If they ever make a runway that goes all the way around the world, Republic Aircraft will make an airplane that can't take off from it."

The F-84F came very close, but then the world was flat in those days....
