Default 767 returns to Sydney on vapour alert

A Qantas flight bound for Melbourne was forced to return to Sydney after a suspect vapour trail was seen coming from the plane's undercarriage.

Domestic flight QF411 departed for Melbourne with 230 passengers at 7.30am (AEST) but returned to Sydney within minutes, a Qantas spokesman said.

Air traffic controllers ordered the plane back when they saw the vapour streaming from the Boeing 767.

Emergency crews were on standby but the plane landed safely and made its way to the domestic terminal, where passengers disembarked.

None of the passengers seemed noticeably shaken by the experience, the spokesman said.

A preliminary inspection by Qantas revealed the problem was caused by a loose hose clamp from which water had leaked from the plane.

Qantas has provided a replacement aircraft, while some passengers have already boarded other flights to Melbourne.

Inspection crews will continue their investigation.

Say you're the Captain on that flight, what do you tell the passengers in a situation like that? Would you just go on with the landing without any type of announcement or actually tell the passengers the truth?

Something I've always wondered.

I remember a family friend telling me her plane had to go around because the Captain said there was a "dog" on the runway. But later in the day they heard on the radio that a plane had to go around because of a miscommunication.

And on a flight down to Palm Beach around this time last year the flight got insanely bumpy. Like, horribly bad (though you airline guys are probably used to it ) and the Captain announced "flight attendants please be seated for arrival" or something like that, don't remember exactly, but we just leveled out probably 20 minutes before coming from Jersey going to Florida. So they probably just said that to comfort us.

This probably isn't the right thread to ask but I'm just curious.
