Default What a let down....not flying-related....

Man...the day came today. A day I thought would be so cool. My 3 1/2 year old's first soccer game. Practices have been fun/frustrating as you could imagine, but today was horrendous. The kids actually did great, but my daughter chose today to be grumpy and disagreeable. Her butt hurt and she was upset that noone was letting her have the ball (her words).

I say this semi tongue-in-cheek, but boy, what a lot of effort (rushing home from work in traffic, going from my car to the family car, getting the other little one ready to go, and making it just in time, and I am also a coach) for no pay off.

I imagine this will happen many times over to me in the years to come. hahaha. Just wanted to vent.

The fact that you were there is more important than the score or how the game went. Any sport that involves a collection of 3 1/2 year olds will be like herding cats and it doesn't get much better with age.

Enjoy just being there and show your kid the support they crave - I'm sitting in a hotel room in Japan and not able to do that today so I'm a little jealous!

This is an opportunity to continue teaching her sportsmanship and teamwork. She'll have good days and bad days, but you'll have to keep hammering some things home every single game.

By the time she's 7 or 8, she'll either be taking it really seriously, or she'll be into something else. 3 1/2? You're lucky if she isn't sitting on the ground pulling out grass.

At that age, my kid was only there for the snack at the end of the game.

HERD BALL!!

Man, I didn't know they let kids that young play organized sports. I didn't get into soccer until I was 5 but I played through highschool and intramural in college.

Have fun watching them. Pretty soon they'll be throwing elbows and head butting. Don't take it too seriously, and please don't be a guy like my dad and take the fun out of it for them some day.

I used to love refereeing those games when I was a teen. Easy and fun so long as the parents weren't the insane "My kid is a soccer star in training..." kind.

I watched a little of the video from the game with my daughter today and it was really funny. All you could hear was her crying...I don't want to share the ball...I don't want to play the red team...I want my Gatorade...etc.

She looked at me and asked "who is that crying so much?" Pretty funny. I told her it was her and she said that she must have had a bad day and that she would have fun at the next game.

Kids are pretty damn funny! This is also the little girl who calls every plane her jet (regardless of propulsion).

If you're like like my parents you'll write this down somewhere in grave detail then pull it out of nowhere when you really need me to do something and hold it over my head for the rest of my life.
