Agreed, I like to make my approach, stealthy like, with docs in my left hand ready to offer. My right is hanging loosely by my side, ready just in case either of them goes for any awkward fist-bump or handshake action. I don’t encourage that, though. That’s my wiping hand.

If you’re off-line, with a seat assignment, always thank the Captain for his/her hospitality.

I guess im old and crusty but I can’t imagine jumping offline and not asking for a ride from the crew, regardless of seat assignment in hand. Entitlement is strong in some

“Hey guys, I’m Tyler! I got a seat in the back. I just finished a red eye from Maui and I’m trying to go home. I’ll be in 27F, if you need me.”
First, why in the hell would we need you?
Secondly,……. no one cares!!!! You’re non-revving,…… you’re interrupting,…… you don’t need the Captain’s permission to non-rev on your own airline. GO SIT DOWN!!!
So because Tyler has apparently never been properly educated on jumpseat and/or non-rev etiquette, let’s cover it here:
* If you’re a non-rev, on your own airline, (or it’s affiliate), with a seat assignment,…… JUST GO SIT DOWN!
* If you’re wanting to ride in a cockpit jumpseat, (on-line OR off-line), go to the cockpit, with your boarding pass, license, medical, and company I.d. in hand, and politely ask the Captain you may ride in his jumpseat.
* If you’re off-line jumpseating, but have a seat in the back,….. stop by the cockpit, introduce yourself, ask the Captain for permission to ride in the back, and thank him/her for the ride.
That’s how it’s done.

Secondly, once I get to the plane , I stop at the cockpit door , leaving my roller bag in the galley as I chat it up with the purser , letting her know I’ll be in the back , you know , in case she needs anything. Next I formally introduce myself to the capt and FO . Asking how their day is going and where their layover is . And of course if I’ve been there , gotta point out the good bars and strip clubs . Now the capt wants to see my credentials so now I go back to the galley and get it out of my roller bag , and once again, gotta chat it up with the Purser.
Now all that’s done , I make my way to my seat , while answering pax questions about the flight , plane and airport along the way . I also formally introduce myself to any FA I see, let them know I’m in the back , just in case they need anything.I’m addition, I help any pax I can with their bags and close any open overhead bin . Now that I’m almost to my seat , I turn around just in time to catch a glimpse of the hot FA in the rear galley and of course I go introduce myself , just in case …….wait for it ………………………,.,,,, just in case she needs anything. Now we are ready for departure.

Well what have we here? It seems we have a very diverse opinion on all of this now days. We really need to get the word out via the unions and come up with a standard operating procedure for jumpseat. I am still old school and insist to the lead flight attendant that I talk to the pilots to politely ask for a ride. But if all this is changing, I’m good with that also.
Also, why are guys even asking for certificates and medicals anymore? I haven’t ask for that crap ever. If the pilot made it past the gate agent, they are good with a company ID. PS…..Delta always asks me for EVERYTHING even my blood type and political affiliation lmao. Half of that was kind of a joke.
