I ask because my FOM tells me I’m supposed to. I’d have a hard time explaining myself to the FAA or CP if something like this ever came up in a debrief.

The jump seat is available as a professional courtesy not a right. I don’t jumpseat often but when I do I have all of my docs ready, medical and certificate included. It’s not that hard.
had that happen to me. Just got a new medical and somehow put the old one in my wallet. found out when asking for JS offline. Got denied, as I should, then went and ride online and got there late. Totally my fault but why can I ride up front on own metal even without a current medical but not on someone else?
is this FAA or security procedures?

Interesting flight attendants don’t have to have a medical certificate but they still come into the cockpit. but we make such a big deal about pilots having the medical certificate though.

or even a dispatcher riding in the cockpit

If you’re off-line, with a seat assignment, always thank the Captain for his/her hospitality.
Not quite as funny as the Delta captain stopping me in the jetbridge after we arrived, spent a few minutes chewing me out about jumpseat ettiquette in front of all the passengers he was blocking. Right until I produced my paid first class ticket and diamond medallion tag and let him think I was going to be an asshat like him... Good times...

Personally, I think a little polite interaction is nice when we're not to busy, regardless of whether it's required.

Secondly, once I get to the plane , I stop at the cockpit door , leaving my roller bag in the galley as I chat it up with the purser , letting her know I’ll be in the back , you know , in case she needs anything. Next I formally introduce myself to the capt and FO . Asking how their day is going and where their layover is . And of course if I’ve been there , gotta point out the good bars and strip clubs . Now the capt wants to see my credentials so now I go back to the galley and get it out of my roller bag , and once again, gotta chat it up with the Purser.
Now all that’s done , I make my way to my seat , while answering pax questions about the flight , plane and airport along the way . I also formally introduce myself to any FA I see, let them know I’m in the back , just in case they need anything.I’m addition, I help any pax I can with their bags and close any open overhead bin . Now that I’m almost to my seat , I turn around just in time to catch a glimpse of the hot FA in the rear galley and of course I go introduce myself , just in case …….wait for it ………………………,.,,,, just in case she needs anything. Now we are ready for departure.
I don’t think I’ve ever laughed so hard. Thanks for that

You are the reason Slick got a little wound up...

JS: Ask FA if I can go in the cockpit, show my ID + form to pilots, aks if they want license and registration (ready, in my pocket).

NR: Tell FA I'm crew, but not JS. Mostly so I get a free beer(no, not when in uniform)/better seat.

Also, he forgot to mention, that he needs to tell maintenance, should they happen to be present around the airplane, that he’s sitting jumpseat today as ‘backup pilot,’ and that he’ll be standing by for maintenance ‘should they need anything.’

Now thats how you non-rev. Level 4 employee.

Google "Denny Fitch". You might just learn something. Maybe.
