A lot of what ATC does could, and should, be automated.

Europe and other locations are gradually moving to a remote tower concept, with a master tower and remote communications outlets at other fields (but no eyes on the traffic).

I've in favor of tower operators who can look out the window.

Based upon the six or so years they tried it out at Leesburg, Va., I think the FAA understands that idea is not ready for prime time; I suspect they won't completely give up on it.
