Default Question about an infraction

This may not be appropriate, and perhaps even result in my getting an infraction...but I gotta know - what happens when an infraction is issued?

I have been here for a while...and have tried to behave myself for the most part. I have seen the mods do a great job of keeping forums open as long as useful. I have also seen people who are complete tools and berate others get an "infraction". I always wondered what happened - a harsh scolding, and then if behaviour doesn't improve perhaps a beating, followed by banishment?
Just would like to know the rungs of discipline. Thanks

Good question. I'm not really sure it's addressed anywhere.

Mods can give an infraction or a warning for a TOS violation. It's kind of like getting pulled over by a cop. Why do you sometimes get a ticket and sometimes get a warning? Leave the cute blonde comments out, but it probably has as much to do with the mood of the mod (cop) and the degree of "offensiveness" of the infraction.

Warning don't count for anything. Infractions vary in number of "points" for certain offenses. For example, racial or advertising infractions are more than one point. Insults, flamebait, and inappropriate language, all count for one point. If you get 10 points, the forum software bans you for two weeks. If you get four infractions (warnings don't count), no matter the point total, you also get banned for two weeks.

The forum software generates a PM whenever you get a warning or an infraction. This is where the mod explains the reason for the infraction. Usually, I get a nasty PM back, but that's just part of the job....

Personally, if I give an infraction, 99% of the time I go back and delete the post as well. It's my feeling that TOS violations that result in an infraction bring the site down and shouldn't be left up. Different mods/admins do it different. Posters are always welcome to go back and repost without the offensive content.

Couple of other points....

If you have a problem with moderation, speak with HSLD and Freight Dog. They are the admins and co-founders of APC. They rule. I've made calls, before, that were overturned after further review. I have no problem with that. To me, that's how the system should work.

Don't lash out at the moderation on the forums. There is no "mod critism" forum. Maybe there should be. But it takes away from the thread when someone says "the moderation at this site sucks cause I got an infraction". Hey, I call them as I see them. If you have a problem with it, feel free to talk to the admins. It doesn't belong at the forums and will most likely be done away with. PM's are fine, too. But leave it off the forums.

I do this job for nothing and I take pride in the end result of how APC differs from FI, or even JC. It's different because the admins created it to be different and the mods enforce the admins intent for the site.

I think I'll make this a sticky....

Appreciate the info. I believe you guys do a really good job of keeping things on track (remember I said that next time I get pulled over).

Really enjoy the site - thanks!

So you're saying I need to stop dropping the F-bomb?

Oh yeah. The F word, in any shape or form, will quickly draw mod attention. We are trying to keep the site professional. There is no need for that sort of language. It's part of what sets us apart.

Just don't go there......

Does the current system work as a deterrent?

What is the difference between a warning and an infraction? What’s a warning? What do you have to do to get one? Depends on severity? Do so many warnings equal a point?

Does an offender get another point for sending a nasty PM back after getting the infraction?

Is there a point or warning assessed for stupidity (including thread drift, non sequitur remarks, thread hijacks) or just plain nastiness that does not rise to the level of name calling or flamebait?

Freight Dog used to post that so-and-so got an infraction. Should mods do this too or was that an affectation on his part? I would think “outing” someone serves as a deterrent. If I saw my neighbor's head get chopped off for some violation, you can be sure I won't be making the same mistake!

Does an infraction “expire” after a certain period of time, like “deferred sentencing?”

Is there such a thing as a lifetime ban? Are there safeguards present to stop a reincarnation?

[Probably get an infraction or two for asking too many questions! ]

Gee, I'm beginning to doubt you're really a lawyer.

sometimes you get infractions for no reason, but that's ok.

"Does the current system work as a deterrent?"

I wish it did. That's the intent.

"What is the difference between a warning and an infraction?"

Warnings have no points. Other than that, no difference. As to why and how, one over the other. It's up to each mods discretion.

"Is there a point or warning assessed for stupidity (including thread drift, non sequitur remarks, thread hijacks)"

I would say no, as stupidity is not a TOS violation. Sometimes I wish it was...

"Freight Dog used to post that so-and-so got an infraction"

When you see a post is deleted, you can see in the remarks why it was deleted. If you see a red card to the right of the screen, you know there was an infraction.

Food for thought. Perhaps that isn't enough of a deterrent.

Maybe we should have a "user got an infraction" forum to point out how and why said users are getting in trouble?
