Default Has it been thought of before?

Has it ever been brought up before or is it too tacky; why don't airlines sell advertisement on the side of their airplanes to help off set the cost of fuel?

I find it ironic that you are asking that question, and your icon is a pilot dressed like a forest ranger. Im not saying it means anything. Im just saying. (Skybus tried the whole advertising on the side of the plane... and their pilots wore uniforms that were a little too close to what a forest ranger would wear, FYI)

Default West Pac and flying Advertisements

Western Pacific could be seen frequently around DEN in the mid-late 90s. I always seemed to see the same jet: the one with FOX and the Simpsons on the side: (From Wikipedia)

Color in the sky
The WestPac livery could be encountered on several aircraft in variations on the basic Western Pacific livery; however, most of the aircraft were painted in colorful logojet schemes. They included advertisements for:So yes, it's been done, and they went out of business when Jet-A was still less than a buck a gallon.

United's former Maintenance base in OAK is now a billboard that you can park six 747-400s inside. Sad--the Port of Oakland really has sold billboard space on the doors.

Default German Wings does it.

German Wings is a big LCC in Germany. They are doing just what the original poster proposed. Some images from A.net

1. It's tacky (I'm also not a fan of seeing the airline website painted on the fuselage)

2. They'd need to do a LOT of advertising.

just remember...the more ads you have on the side of your plane, the closer you really are to glorified bus driver...and management will pay you accordingly.
