Word was that attitude control was very twitchy due to lack of drag...if you got started spinning, nothing would slow you down, and if you lost SA you could get out of control and lose consciousness. Being physically torn apart was not out of the question.
Ask a tactical pilot if he wants to eject at 600 kts...same concept.

September 22nd. Flying over via standard commercial since DoD cancelled the ATA contract. Spent some time in a 172 recently and itching to get the next two years behind me and move on to my next career, regardless of market conditions. Thanks for asking.

Joesph Kittinger is a hero in my book! Talk about gutsy. I wonder if any of his equipment and story is in the Air & Space museum?
I gotta know, though: who took the picture !? lol

One of our Pilot personal equipment officers (additional duty) went to the cold hanger at Eglin AFB and tested a "simulated" ejection at 70,000 ft temperatures in the pressure suit. Our IAS at altitude was 115 kts and they couldn't simulate that let alone the terminal free fall speed after three to four minutes.
His advice after returning - If the airplane is burning, ride it down and stay warm.
