Are there any Airline Pilots out there that are NOT in favor for drilling in the U.S.A? If so I would like to hear what you have to say. I think almost every pilot is in favor of drilling including myself.

Thank you for posting and lets try our best to keep the political commets out this thread.

Honestly, I could care either way. Drilling for oil would be a short term remedy whose benefits would be almost negligible (according to some) and it would take a couple of years to even appreciate the effect. As we all know, drilling gets more expensive as oil prices go up due to the raw materials needed, so the break even point for most sites is exorbitantly high right now.
Would it help? The only way to find out would be to go ahead with it, but I fear that it's too little too late. The free ride had to end eventually. Besides, while we're complaining about $4-5 a gallon, most other developed countries are paying twice that amount. It's all a matter of perspective.......

Impossible for a thread like this to stay away from politics. 67% of americans are now in favor of drilling and / or exploration if it will bring down price (heard on the news anyway). Importantly, however, the oil companies currently have drilling rights on 91 million acres of federal land that they currently are not using. Haven't heard the why to that part. But, I did hear a Senator claim that an oil CEO recently testified that if oil prices were reflective of supply/demand curve, then oil would be 55 per barrel.

I can see this going downhill really fast... It seems that when the American public majority favors something controversial, they will blame the government if it does not go exactly like planned or the way they thought it would be. Look at Iraq! 70%+ of Americans were in favor of going over there 7 years ago, now look at how many are in favor. Oh well, maybe this won't be as bad though, just my .02!!!

That sounds about right. The best way to lower prices 25-35% right now would be to provide some level of regulating the industry and keeping the dirty speculators out of the picture. Talk to your commodities trader and find out why oil prices are skyrocketing!!!

opening the strategic oil reserves and building refineries with tax payer money, and leasing them to operators will go way further. the minute the US announces we will not buy oil the price will drop dramatically. the minute the US announces we will build refineries and lease them to operators the price will drop even more.
additionally, announcing that we will pour 20 billion a year to make coil-oil and carbon sequestration a reality will drop the oil even further.
those 3 announcements done 1 week apart plus a stop to oil speculation by imposing huge limits on margin except for airlines and other real industries will bring oil down to normal levels.
All it takes is a few simple announcements. way easier than drilling.
way better then to play to the oil companies greed

ps: why can't the airlines get the same sweet deal on fuel as farmers do with their "red diesel"?

I don't understand the argument against drilling. The main argument being that it will be years before the new fields begin producing the amount of oil to make any price difference. That seems like a poor excuse to not drill. I realize we are a society of instant gratification, but these things DO take time. If this is the argument, why endeavor to do anything that takes more than a few weeks, months, or years to achieve? Why build that new house...heck, it won't be finished for 9 months! Why find a cure for cancer or AIDS...could take years! I'm sure there are many similar and equally absurd examples. Have a made a point?
