One Drink is Too Many to Drive

Not sure what forum to post this in.
Read this interesting article yesterday in the Albuquerque Journal. (you have to watch a stupid ad to view it)
Albuquerque Journal
Basically, it says that in New Mexico you can be arrested for driving while intoxicated even if your blood-alcohol level is below .08. People are actually being convicted after blowing a .04. The law, as written in 1919, precludes anyone from driving if they are "impared to the slightest degree" by alcohol.
So heads up if you are in New Mexico. One drink could give the police all the ammunition they need to bust you for driving while intoxicated and derail your career.

Florida has a similiar statue for DUI. The law states that at .08 or if you appear to be impaired, you can be arrested for driving under the influence. Since the 2nd part is a judgement call by the officer, a lot of resources have poured into video cameras and mobile wolf packs that specialize in seeking out impaired drivers. Bottom line for me: if I'm driving I'm not drinking. If both the wife and I want to have a few for a night out on the town, than we take a cab.

I agree that one is too many to drive. About a year and a half ago in southern Arizona the army invited a sheriffs deputy and city police officer from the local DUI task force over to give a presentation during a safety stand-down day. What they had to say was very eye opening.
MADD has made great strides across the country in making more restrictive laws regarding DUI's. While in most cases the base .08 remains in place other factors such has who you have in the car, what age they are, and the "impaired to the slightest degree" catch all are making it very difficult for anyone to get away with having one or two drinks and driving home.
Your career isn't worth it, your freedom isn't worth it, and the hit to your finances isn't worth it, so don't do it.
Finally, figuring out how your are going to get back to your car the next morning can be quite an adventure in itself.
