You can get pretty close to the tower when you're taking off of 28R in PDX and told to turn to a heading of 250 immediately, but obviously you can't get as close as he did the video.

I wonder if the fed's have had a talk with "Red Bull Devil"?

Might have some explanin' to do...

§ 91.303 Aerobatic flight.

No person may operate an aircraft in aerobatic flight—

(a) Over any congested area of a city, town, or settlement;

(b) Over an open air assembly of persons;

(c) Within the lateral boundaries of the surface areas of Class B, Class C, Class D, or Class E airspace designated for an airport;

(d) Within 4 nautical miles of the center line of any Federal airway;

(e) Below an altitude of 1,500 feet above the surface; or

(f) When flight visibility is less than 3 statute miles.

For the purposes of this section, aerobatic flight means an intentional maneuver involving an abrupt change in an aircraft's attitude, an abnormal attitude, or abnormal acceleration, not necessary for normal flight.

there are obviously waivers for most of those rules, or are you going to tell me the blue angels do everything above 1500 ft AGL? And never within the lateral boundaries of an airport.....The redbull racers fly within feet of blowup towers, though not the safest flying ever, at least he is trained in what he does.

unlike some run of the mill cfi's who I have heard stories of doing "test" maneuvers with all sorts of civil aircraft

They may have a few wires loose, but they gave the tower a lot more space than they give the pylons. Fun times!

Rumor mill on another web forum says this was Paul Bonhomme, and that he may have been temporarily suspended from the Red Bull races because of this incident.

I didn't exactly hear the controllers radioing him, telling him to back off and follow standard traffic patterns. Makes me think it was arranged between him and the tower from the get-go.

from the video it sounded like they knew it was coming, especially since someone was there to videotape it, and started out with the camera in the right direction... also, didnt sound like any of the controllers were ****ed or scared either...
