Getting drunk is a waste of life!

First, read these articles that begin to make my point for me.

Wow.
I understand that many people think that drinking is a stress reliever. I can enjoy A drink also, but I am responsible about it. Some alcohol is enjoyable in moderation, but why waste your life getting drunk? I used to party hard and I even "won" several drinking contests. (Wow, I should have been so proud.)
But then one day about 45 minutes after 18 shots of Jack Daniels in a 10 minute contest, I had an epiphany! As I bowed before the porcelain throne of a college dorm bathroom and my insides were nearly rejected, I thought, "Why am I here? Is this supposed to be fun? There has to be more to life than this!" That was 13 years ago.
Well, there IS too much to life to waste away in a drunken stupor. Pilots are supposed to be known for good judgment. Why would I ever put myself in a position where my judgment is compromised?
We all had basic training on aeromedical factors. Remember a little thing called hystotoxic hypoxia? Remember a little detail from high school health class called alcohol poisoning? Getting drunk overloads your liver, kills brain cells, and lowers inhibitions.
Life is too precious. There are better ways to have fun - fun that doesn't ruin your life, the lives of those who love you, or the lives of anyone else.

As I get older, I don't find myself getting any wiser. In fact, I have this overwhelming desire to chuck my job, hitchhike to ANC, visit all my APC friends who live there. Then the finale is for all of us to go to the F Street Station Bar and Grill, where we get hopelessly drunk. At least we had fun.
And I don't even drink!
Note to the original poster - I am just kidding, ok? I know alcoholism and its effects are a serious matter. A number of my family succumbed to its siren and they were never the same again.

Are you guys serious? I have read posts from all of you before, and you seem like intelligent people. The reasons why you care should be obvious.
First, have you not known or loved anyone whos life was ruined by excess alcohol? I do. Excessive alcohol is destructive. It is not funny, it is not a joke. Again, I am not crying for another Prohibition here. I am not against having a drink. I just had one with dinner.
Responsibility is the issue at stake.
Second: We pilots are often thought of as "dashing", wild, adventurous, etc. These are all good qualities. Unfortunately, we are also burdened with stereotypes such as "reckless", "whiny", "arrogant", "rude", and "can't keep their pants on." Uh, I wonder why?!?!?!? What are we doing to change the stereotypes?
As I pointed out in the "Mooning Pilots" forum, these negative stereotypes (that are often reinforced by irresponsible individuals like the ones in the news) drag down the public perception of what kind of person a pilot is. If the public perceives that pilots are not very respectable, responsible, and trustworthy members of society and need to be babysat, THEN WE WILL BE PAID AND TREATED ACCORDINGLY!!!! So many pilots on this forum complain about pay and QOL, then they go get hammered and do something that (like it or not) brands us all with a negative stereotype.
Seriously. Some pilots need to stop complaining about how "the man is holding us down" until they can get their own act together and we as a community can regain an image of discipline and class. A major reason why pilots used to command more respect is because they were more respectable. It's time for more discipline among peers.

Judge Smails: Well, the world needs ditch diggers, too.
They were stupid, they'll be penalized accordingly, by the law and/or their next hiring board. Is this an intervention or what? Preach elsewhere. Most of us here have our **** together(or have been lucky). Either way...
