Default Handheld Radio Help

Hey People,

I am going to purchase a handheld transceiver. I am looking at the Icom IC-A24 and the Vertex Standard VXA-300. Does anyone have any experiences they would be willing to share on the radios and how they function? I want the good, bad and the . . . you get the point. I am also open to any suggestions.

Thanks,
Patrick

I have the two year old equivalent of the VXA-300 pilot III and I really like it. It has many great features such as the memory function which makes quick tuning a snap. I also like the VOR feature as an extra emergency backup item if the need arrises.

I used it as a CFI when students would solo and the communications between us were clear as a bell on both ends. It is extremely rugged and great on batteries.

I own an iCom IC-A24 and love it. I don't have any experience with the VXA-300 but I own a VX-7R handheld amateur radio made by Vertex Standard, the same company that makes the VXA-300. The VX-7R is Vertex Standards highest end amateur radio, but I think the iCom is a better radio overall.

I would recommend IC-A24 because I think iCom products are generally higher quality than Vertex Standard, I'm sure their both great radios though.
