Hey Crashman,

Was that a joke? Because if it was, I don't get it but would like to laugh along with you about it.

Suffice to say that the present system provides the most comfort to passengers and has less of a chance of spilling the captains coffee. Good question though!
It wouldn't work like a boat. You need the bank to develop the centripetal force (horizontal component of lift) which causes the airplane to deviate from a straight path.

I am very aware of the question and the answer. I tried to keep the response SIMPLE to avoid a dissertation on physics. Airplanes will turn without ailerons, and if you want to get into physics we can go there but don't plan to overcomplicate the basic question.

I know you can turn without ailerons, but attempting to turn with rudder alone will still produce the bank necessary to generate the turning force. No bank, no turn.
