Default Are We Still In A Recession?

My husband informed me the other day that he has one more week of vacation that he must take before the end of the year. So I am willing to close my coffee shop from Christmas to New Year's Day and perhaps go to Germany with him to visit my little nephews. I began to look at all my usual websites etc for airfare.

Forget the popular destinations. Absolutely no seats available regardless of fare. The not so popular destinations will require me to part with more money than I can afford. I looked into Frankfurt, Paris, London, Madrid, Hong Kong, Aruba, Puerto Rico, Manila, Bangkok, then moved to Montreal, Calgary, Mexico City, Puerto Vallarta, Honolulu, and in desperation, looked into San Francisco, New York, Kansas City, my beloved San Antonio, and even Las Vegas. Phew. Nothing.

Maybe I shouldn't travel on Christmas Day? Maybe I should just open my coffee shop on Christmas Day.

The under-employed, unemployed, disaffected, all taken together only comes to about 18% of the working population in this country. So for 80% or more, it's business as usual. I wonder about the same thing sometimes, and in Wichita the recession is felt as hard as it is anywhere, yet you would never know it from how things look.

Officially, the recession is over as there was a GDP increase in the last quarter. At least that's what I read somewhere not long ago.

Airlines have cut their schedules back to account for reduced demand. Oversold is the way they prefer to do business nowdays...I wouldn't read too much into it.

Are we still in a recession? My answer to that is......FedEx. Absolutely, positively.

Btw Cubdriver, who are those 18%? Personally, I think that percentage is quite a bit higher than what's actually being reported. JMO though.

I was just guessing based on no particular source, but I listen to the news a lot. It was not a bad guess according to US Bureau of Labor Statistics who puts it at 17.5% for those groups in total. I would take what USBLS says as gospel on this subject because it's all they are paid to do and they do not have any political affiliations.

Agreed 100%; I just wonder why we have these institutions, then turn right around and marginalize their findings.

Informative link though!
