See above three links. The three main predictors are pressure(altitude), temperature and humidity. Specific engine type may impact the results. There is also a possibility of suppressing contrails through chemical additives.

We've been testing that by turning the system on and off repeatedly over many areas. Testing has been greatly reduced because people are becoming suspicious of the 'dashed' trails. Most crews these days are opting for keeping the chemtrail a solid, contiguous line resembling a natural vapor cloud to remain inconspicuous.
