This is another case study as to why you can never win economically in the airline business...when times are good profits (if any) are razor thin, but the slightest hiccup generates massive losses which would take decades to recoup. War, terror, epidemic, weather, recession...and now add one more to the list. The moral of the story: Don't hold airline stocks.

My attempt at jocularity was pretty bad, I'll keep my day job.
But thinking about this a little more I came across this thought. Will the insurance companies that underwrite the airframes cover them if they fly through the volcanic ash? Say you have a brandy new A 380 and it incurs damage flying around/near this large cloud, wouldn't they be able to negate the responsibility of paying for repairs. Or, God forbid, a large twin like a B777 or A 330, with just 2 engines, the consequences could be a lot more dire.
I remember back in 1982, BA flight 9, lost all 4 engines but managed to get some back running over high terrain...
