fwiw...this initially posted in the 91/low time as food for thought for what 121s think low time pilots are 'really worth'.

As a part 91 pilot, and never going 121, I can still say I disagree with the 1500 rule. It's not practical, it's not going to improve safety. The rest rules are probably the #1, but also pay would sure help to.

The 1500 hour rule would not apply to part 91, you can still fly a C-172 with 250 hours.

I think the rule would improve airline safety, perhaps in a round-about way. What we need is more committed professionals, with maturity and good judgement. 1500 hours alone may or may not accomplish that, it would depend on how the hours were acquired.

But for many folks, the benefit will come from the process of GETTING the 1500 hours (and ME time) which will require several years of networking, financial discipline, and probable job hopping. Throw in some night prop flying in bad weather, and you will end up with something closer to a mature adult who appreciates the hard realities of aviation (as opposed to a frat boy with 300 hours from a canned training environment).

This is a given. What is shocking...or maybe it isn't at this point, is why in good gawd's name is ALPA jumping on the AIRLINE bandwagon fighting to lower qualifications!

ALPA is a corrupt band of dopes that no longer represents the interests of Airline Pilots. With friends like them, I do not need enemies.

ALPA, stop helping us, PLEASE.

It's time for member airline unions to leave ALPA, and form or join a national Airline Pilot union that will represent Airline Pilot interests.

If the Airlines don't want to pay, then by god I don't think the prospective pilots are going to want to pay to be a pilot either. By paying i'm talking about flight training. It's hard to get students as a flight instructor now. Banks won't approve student loans, and others cannot afford to fly out of pocket to make their training worthwhile. I'm talking about the once or twice a month students that keep regressing. And as far as the students go, their paying more for the airplane and gas then when I was a student........... and all this for what? 12-17,000 a year as a rookie commercial pilot or flight instructor.

The results that i've seen so far in this economy has been flight instructors quitting the business altogether for a job that can pay the bills and student loans. Guys that have quit that I thought were just as good if not better than me as an instructor, and I have not had one student fail a checkride on me.

Thank you, beat me to it.

I don't mind the arguement of having a university style program, and then only needing 500hrs. Of course, then you're going to get reemed for the additional hours at the school, but these programs can cater towards actual training. At my Alma Mater, we had 2 727 sim's, and I thought the training did a lot for my skill set. I don't even think it has to be in specific airplanes, as long as the structure is there.

On the counter to that arguement, I also believe some 61 schools out there have just as good as chance of teaching a capable pilot that takes things seriously.

Unfortunately there will never be a one-size-fits-all out there.
