Default Pilots - I need your help.

Hello all...I am working on my portfolio to get into grad school (landscape architecture and community planning joint program)...one of my portfolio ideas is converting an abandoned airfield into public park/green space...a little gimmicky I know but this is just to prove to the admission folks that I have some vision.

Anyway, I was wondering if y'all know of any good abandoned airfields and where I can get some photos to base my design / drawings around. If I have enough time and money I may make a crude 3D mockup to impress them a little more.

Any recommendations are great and thank you for your help and time.

I would pick old Mueller Airport here in Austin but it is already planned for a mixed res/comm community.

If you want a good project to look at, consider doing a conversion plan of the old Meigs Field in Chicago. There's plenty of pictures and diagrams on the airport since the mayor closed it down several years ago (with the intent of converting it into green space). You might even find some alternative plans out there to get your creative juices flowing (although to date, none of them have been completed or even started...)

It's just one ugly 1/3 mile x 1 mile long grass and dirt covered island out there beside lake michigan. As for photos, look at google earth for top down pictures...

Why not use an active one in your local area to show how a transformation could be made. It might have a more dramatic effect if the evaluators already know the location. It also might spark public interest in actually following through and closing down the airport to make a park.

They haven't built a park in place of Meigs? I though that was Daley's plan...if that land is still vacant it is truly a disappointment that he demolished that airport.

Nope. Still nothing but dirt and STILL closed to the public as far as I know...

So much for his platform of uniting the common man against "rich" GA pilots who steal valuable waterfront green space for their "hobbies".

The old airport in Austin is already planned for development. Another GA airport out in Lakeway (3R9) has strong GA support behind it because it is a public airfield supported wholly by private citizens - Lakeway residents.

I was more looking along the lines of real "eyesores" that have been closed and could be converted into green space...

Thanks for the suggestions, though...

With all the Wright Amendment talk and, well, friction between DFW and Dallas Love, how about doing it on turning Dallas Love (KDAL) into a park. There was someone around here (texas) that proposed turning it into a subdivion during the strongest part of the debate.
