Default Headsets?

Next month I will begin training at one of two regionals.

I was told by another applicant that some airlines dont allow the use of the Bose X headset in the cockpit.

Just wondering if thats true, and if so, why?

Which headests would you recommend?

Thanks!

Headset choice depends a lot on which airplane you'll be flying. Some are much louder than others.

it would either be a Q400 or the CRJ700

But still, do airlines not allow the Bose X?

The FAA does not want pilots using headsets without a TSO number stamped on them. Perhaps the Bose headsets do not have a TSO number?

Use the headset that comes with the airplane. Sell the Bose and buy as much top ramen as you can.

Some airlines restrict the use of the Bose non-aviation headset with the Uflymike conversion, maybe that's what your pal was referring to?

Nobody likes the non-TSO version where it goes totally dead when the batteries die. That's seems to make sense -- at least to me.

Buy the Bose X/A20, save your hearing. I think it's an invaluable investment. Using company headsets is disgusting in my opinion, breeding ground for germs.

Hear hear! Trans States forces us to A) Use the company headsets or B) Buy the exact same model as the company uses.

The guys I fly with are cool and all, but I don't really want to use the headset they just sneezed, coughed, and breathed on for four days.

The Bose is a great headset, but headsets that rely so heavily on electronic "active" noise reduction don't really do that much to physically protect your hearing. I used the A20 when I was flight instructing, but didn't find it to work that well in the Q400. It was quiet enough, but I got a lot of feedback from the intercom system, and could hear bleed-through from the FA's talking on the phone in back. That got very annoying very quickly.

Personally, I'd consider an in-ear headset like the Clarity Aloft. I have the TSO Clarity Aloft and got custom earmolds made for it by an audiologist. It works great in the Q400, and I assume would do equally well in an RJ.

Used the Bose QC2 with the TSO'd UFlyMike on the Q400 and it was awesome.
