Default Sunglasses

Quick question. I'll eventually be in the market for sunglasses. I've heard a rumor that with polarized sunglasses, pilots can't see (can't make out, can't understand, I don't know, just one way or another render useless) the Garmin 430's in our aircraft. Is this a bogus rumor (it sounds really fishy to me), or is there some truth to it? If so, does it happen with all LCD's, Garmin hardware, or what?

Some of this was covered here:

They don't work well in aircraft. Too much distortion is visible in the cockpit glass.

I have a pair of Serengetis and they work fine in the G1000 and regular 172 cockpits..

Polarized sunglasses made the King Air windshield have black vertical lines.

I now use el-cheapos that cost a maximum of $25.00. They block UV, are not polarized, and I don't cry for a week when I break them or forget them somewhere.

polarized sunglasses will make some screens go completely black when you tilt your head a certain way. I used to have a pair that i wore when flying, it was a pain in the butt, never again

This link explains how polarization works. It shows how if you rotated two polarized lenses 90 degrees from each other, they let NO light through. So if anything in the aircraft is polarized (Garmin screen etc) and your polarized glasses lens is oriented 90 degrees, the screen will appear black.

I wish I would have asked the same question before I went and bought a $150 pair of "polorized" Ray Bans. Now, I'm once again in the market for sunglasses, this time "non-polorized". I do love them for fishing and just about everything else though. They just don't work well in a lot of cockpits.

I don't normally wear a certain pair of sunglasses, but one day I did in the 767-400 and when I turned my head the screens went black. Now I'm sure not to wear them. I don't spend much on glasses. I don't pay for names.

The AF gave me a free pair in 1996 when I first went to the sandbox. I've kept them since then and they have never let me down...Nice military issue case and everything...
