I went to the cockpit to ask permission. The Captain was an older male and the pilot on the right was a younger female. I addressed the Skipper as Captain and asked for a ride. As always, the crew was gracious and accommodating. Upon arrival, I thanked the older pilot and merely said goodbye to the younger pilot. While waiting for my bag in the jet bridge, I saw that both pilots had 4 stripes. I assumed that she was an FO, I barely acknowledged her and Didn’t acknowledge her rank. Sorry...

When I jumpseat I acknowledge both pilots regardless of “rank.” It’s common courtesy. This isn’t the military.

Personally I stand with one pace inside the door, at full attention and formally state my request as follows:

Sir (ma’am), This is regional pilot (rank, last name) requesting use of your jumpseat for the duration of flight (flt number)!

Once given permission, I salute and shake the FOs hand.

If the captain isn’t present, I just introduce myself to the FO, make a crude joke of some kind then go take a seat or start texting :D

No kidding. This was exactly what I thought. Seriously, you didn’t thank the FO because of her “rank”? Wow.

Meh, it happens. That said, i always make eye contact with both while introducing myself and thank both as I'm deplaning. :)

This was the next “gem” after the peach tree rant over our failed TA. What an ass. I looked up the atl chart and he should not have turned onto Lima.
Sorry if it’s a repost but this dude deserves a honorary tool of the year

I didn’t call her Captain and automatically assumed she was an FO. It was a dick move.

What people are geting at is why not just always treat both pilots with the same courtesy regardless of rank? It's very telling that that hasn't even crossed your mind...lol

Concur. When I was in the left seat at a regional I flew with many pilots that had some serious and humbling bonadides. Majors and colonels who had been passed over by the majors. 135 pilots who had twice the turbine PIC time that I had in conditions 10x more challenging. I had four stripes on my shoulder and they "only" had three not because I was somehow a better pilot or had achieved more (I'm not and I hadn't) but because I had been slogging away in the regional game longer than they had. That's it.

Doesn’t matter what their background or their “rank” is, why would you thank one and not the other?
